September Practice of the Month : Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction can be a transformative step in deepening your relationship with God and discovering your unique calling. Spiritual direction is a keystone practice within Our Shared Way of Life, providing essential guidance for those seeking to notice and respond to God’s invitations.

Through listening, asking questions, and encouraging you to notice the movements of the Holy Spirit, a spiritual director can help you tune into God’s presence more fully. Rather than offering answers, they accompany you on your journey, helping you hear God’s voice more clearly.

Spiritual direction offers me a space to really process the way God moves in my life with the guidance of a compassionate, trained person. Similar to having a personal trainer for physical health, or a therapist for mental health, spiritual direction allows me to exercise my spirituality with someone who can help me pinpoint areas of growth. I have been able to hone in on the areas where I live out my faith most fully and experience God. - Sammi

Spiritual direction is also a powerful tool for discerning life-giving practices that draw you closer to God. Spiritual practices work differently in each person. A director can help you develop a spiritual rhythm that aligns with your unique personality and easily fits into your life. Practices that nurture your soul, fostering a deeper sense of peace and intimacy with God.

I do not know where I’d be without spiritual direction. There is no other space that more quickly connects me to the specific expression of God’s love in my life. - Hannah

Perhaps most importantly, spiritual direction can help you discern God’s calling for your life. By reflecting on how God is leading you, a spiritual director can help you explore the ways you are called to serve others, live out your gifts, and participate with God in making the Kingdom more tangible in our city.

For me, SD is a place to catch my spiritual and emotional breath. So often I'm locked in on a situation, therefore caught in an endless loop of overthinking and anxiety. Having my spiritual director pull the lens back on my life where I can find God, who's always been there, has been a formational in my Jesus' journey. - Mike

Whether you're just beginning your journey or seeking to go deeper, spiritual direction can be a valuable practice from Our Shared Way of Life, offering support and wisdom as you grow in faith. If you don’t already have a spiritual director you are encouraged to reach out to Sister Heather Kristine for a free consultation to see if now is the best time to start.
